Vivo V9 Vs Oppo F7: Camera, Performance, Battery, And More Compared

Vivo V9 and Oppo F7 - both phones claim similar features like AI-powered beautification mode, both have been launched in India just recently, and both have the notch. The price difference between them is just Rs 1,000, which begs the question, which is the better one to buy? We tested every aspect of both phones to get the answer.

Dual-cameras on smartphones are the rage today, and every manufacturer is trying to squeeze out the best picture quality by pairing two cameras. Currently we are seeing the use of the telephoto lens, RGB and monochrome sensors, artificial bokeh (portrait mode), and so on. The best part is, the tech is not limited to high-end devices and hence, you don’t need a lot of money to own a reliable smartphone with a dual-camera setup.

There are a number of mid-budget smartphones available today in India that boast of a solid camera experience, and we’ve pit four smartphones against each other for a quick camera comparison test to see which company offers the best.

Our first contender is the newly launched Nokia 7 Plus. This one has Zeiss optics on the front and rear cameras. The rear dual-camera setup features 12-megapixel sensor with an f/1.75 aperture lens, a gyro-based EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation), dual-pixel phase detection autofocus and a dual-LED flash. It is paired with another 12-megapixel camera with an f/2.6 aperture and a telephoto lens offering 2x optical zoom. At the front, Nokia is using a 16-megapixel unit with an f/2.0 aperture lens.

Next is the Oppo F7, and while this doesn’t incorporate a dual-camera setup, the company claims that the single camera setup is capable of delivering a portrait mode by using AI (Artificial Intelligence) and software. The primary camera is a 16-megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens with phase detection autofocus and an LED flash. The real deal is the front camera, which comes with a 25-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture lens.

We added the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro in this comparison since we found the camera setup quite capable during our review. The primary camera includes a 12-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, paired with a 5-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. There is phase detection autofocus and an LED flash. At the front there is a 20-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash.

Lastly, there is the Vivo V9 which has a very similar design to the Oppo F7. In the camera department there is a 16-megapixel sensor and a 5-megapixel sensor with phase detection autofocus and a dual-LED flash. Even this one has a high-resolution 24-megapixel front facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

For the camera comparison, we took some shots in various light conditions to check the capability of each camera phone. We checked for colour reproduction, contrast, low-light capability, and picture details. We even tested the front camera since a lot of consumers today want front cameras that are as good as the tech at the back.

The Oppo F7 in our opinion offered natural colour reproduction in most light situations. If you look at the graffitti image, all three phones, except the F7 have a yellow cast. Basically the camera tends to produce a more cool tone. Also if you look at the photo of the keyboard, the blacks are deeper and better looking.

Contrast

Here the Redmi Note 5 Pro proved to be better than the rest. The image with the round chairs has a rich red colour, although the Oppo seems to produce very similar results. The photo with the coloured dots is where you can see the high-contrast on the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Low-Light

This was a tough one, but considering the picture we have used for low-light it is clear that the Nokia 7 Plus is holding up pretty well. Not only did it manage to retain the colour and details, it also did a pretty decent job controlling the light coming from the windows.

Details

We felt the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Oppo F7 offered good details in most light situations. Having said that, in low-light, details on both of these phones felt washed out. As we mentioned before, the Nokia 7 Plus offers better details in low light.

Front camera

All four phones are pretty amazing when it comes to selfies. All phones offer artificial bokeh where the Redmi Note 5 Pro proved to be the best and it seems that Xiaomi is putting an quite a bit of effort in this department.

If you’re looking to ditch contracts and troublesome payment plans for phones, then you might want to consider something off-contract. Traditionally, off-contract devices have gotten pretty cheap, and they still relatively are in comparison to big-name contract phones. In fact, many high end off-contract devices can be gotten for a few hundred dollars less than, say, a Samsung Galaxy S8.

The story is no different with the Oppo R11S and the OnePlus 5T. Both are high-end affordable phones that’ll keep you far away from a contract. And, a huge positive to these devices is that you’ll be able to take them to almost any carrier, since they’ll be Unlocked, too.

The Oppo R11S is a relatively large device. The screen comes in at a whopping 6.01-inches, but has a high resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 with a pixel density of 401ppi. You’re getting an AMOLED screen here, too, so colors are going to be deep and vibrant looking. Hardware wise, it has a Qualcomm 660 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and a dual 16-megapixel camera. A large 3,200mAh battery ensures long battery life as well.

Overall, the Oppo R11S is an excellent phone. It’s fast, modern, lasts a long time, takes great photos and looks fantastic thanks to the bezel-less display. Many are already calling this phone Android’s cheaper iPhone X.

Connectivity, of course, is it’s biggest problem. It appears that it’ll work on a handful of carriers, such as AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States, but coverage might be spotty, as the R11S only supports 2 out of 4 of T-Mobile and AT&T’s LTE bands, so you might not get true LTE or even LTE at all; however, you’ll get 3G just fine. 3G is pretty slow though, so it’s hard to recommend the Oppo R11S to those in the United States.

OnePlus 5T

On the other hand, you have the OnePlus 5T. This phone will work on GSM carriers in the United States — you should get LTE on AT&T, T-Mobile and alternatives (Cricket Wireless, Ting, etc) just fine. It really is a step ahead of the Oppo R11S as far as connectivity goes. The downside is that this phone has trouble working on CDMA carriers, so Sprint and Verizon customers are out of luck here. But, it’s not too bad of an issue since you’ll be able to take the OnePlus 5T to any GSM carrier, and at a cheap cost as well, since you’re not leasing a phone.

The OnePlus 5T does have some great specs. In fact, OnePlus is calling it the fastest phone around. It’s got a 6.01-inch Optic AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080. It has the same pixel density as the Oppo R11S — 401ppi. You get a beefier Snapdragon 835 processor, options for 128GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM or 64GB of internal storage and 6GB of RAM. You get a impressive dual 16-megapixel camera setup on the rear, and a super impressive 16-megapixel front-facing camera, which is something you rarely see in phones. It also has a large 3,300mAh battery, which may or may not last you a long time, as this phone is pulling some serious power.

It is, however, running off of USB-C connectivity with some fast-charging features built in, so you should be able to charge up your phone considerably in just a couple of minutes.

The OnePlus 5T will set you back around $500 for the 64GB/6GB RAM model. That’s straight from OnePlus (if you can snag one from their site), or you can get the 128GB/8GB for around $560. You’ll be looking at a little bit more on Amazon.

Verdict

So, which one should you pick up? It’s hard to recommend the Oppo R11S to anyone, purely based on it’s compatibility with different networks. You’ll be hard pressed getting true LTE, if any LTE or 4G connectivity at all. We can easily hand this one to OnePlus based on that alone, but OnePlus does have a few advantages, too.

With the OnePlus 5T, you’ll get a beefier processor as well as a much better storage and RAM setup, which can exponentially speed up your phone. If you’re trying to make a choice between the two, it’s difficult to pass up the high end hardware, connectivity and great customer support of the OnePlus 5T.
