Amazon Discounts Still Available: $70 Echo, $100 Paperwhite And More
While Amazon was pulling out all the stops with its star-studded 2019 Super Bowl commercial two Sundays ago, it was also slashing prices on a wide array of its Alexa-powered devices, including its Echo smart speaker and Kindle Paperwhite e-reader. Now, with Valentine's Day on the horizon, some of these deals are still available -- though we don't know for how much longer. Our advice: Act now, while the company may be preoccupied with other matters.
We've rounded up the key deals here.

Echo Show 2018 for $180 (save $50)
The Echo Show has seen serious competition from Google's smart display devices, which are often cheaper (and, in some ways, better). But if you're an Alexa-only household, getting $50 off the 10-inch Echo Show is nothing to sniff at.
The Show is currently on back-order, but is still available for purchase. Amazon says it will be back in stock on Feb. 23.

Amazon's 2018 refresh of its Paperwhite e-book reader is an enthusiastic CNET Editors' Choice for anyone looking for a dedicated reading device. It's finally waterproof, and the addition of Bluetooth audio makes it great for audiobook fans, too.

Alexa remains the gold-standard voice assistant in the game, and the new and improved Echo was already worthwhile at $100. For $70, it's a steal.
See at Amazon Read the CNET review Amazon Smart Plug for $20 (save $5)
If you're already committed to Alexa gear, this smart plug will do the trick -- and this is about as good a price as you'll find. That noted, there are better -- though more expensive -- smart plugs out out there, like the TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug with Power Monitoring, that provide more customization and broader compatibility. (Amazon has cut the original $10 discount in half, but that's still 20 percent off its normal price.)
See at Amazon Read the CNET review No longer available: AmazonBasics Microwave with Alexa, $42 (save $18)
This deal was no longer available as of Feb. 12.
This is a compelling price for any plain old microwave this size -- but, of course, this AmazonBasics model has support for Alexa built in, too. You'll still need an Echo speaker nearby to parse your commands -- the microwave doesn't have an integrated microphone -- but if Alexa has already taken over your home, this microwave is an obvious next step.
The Microwave is currently on back-order but still available for purchase. Amazon says it will be back in stock on Feb. 19.

Amazon Discounts Garmin, Fossil, And Apple Watches For Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is almost here, and if you’re hunting after a great gift for that special techie in your life, then a good smartwatch might be just the ticket. Now’s a great time to grab one, too: These wearables have only gotten better and have surged in popularity over the past couple years, with the Apple Watch notably outselling the entire Swiss watch industry in 2018. Which is why it’s so exciting when we see top brands like Apple, Garmin, Fossil, and Samsung offering steep discounts on some great wearables.
As with the smartphone market, a ton of tech brands have thrown their own hats into the ring to chase Apple’s success; some naturally stand above the others, though, and a number of our favorites are now on sale just in time for Valentine’s Day. To help you find the perfect V-Day gift, or just to help you save money on a new wearable for yourself, we’ve sniffed out the five best smartwatch deals available on Amazon right now:
It’s only fitting that we lead with the Apple Watch given its massive success in the burgeoning smartwatch market. The Series 4 was just released, but Apple is still offering the excellent and feature-packed Series 3 due to its enduring popularity. It remains one of our own favorites thanks to its great build quality, built-in GPS, a heart-rate monitor for fitness tracking, and it’s loaded with the snappy and intuitive WatchOS software.
The standard Apple Watch Series 4 would set you back around $400 (with some models costing even more), but the white 42mm Series 3 is a much more affordable choice at just $229 on Amazon after an $80 Valentine’s Day discount.

The Apple Watch may lead the pack when it comes to smartwatches, but unless you’ve got an iPhone, you won’t be able to get the most out of it. If you’re more of an Android type of person (like most people are), then Samsung still makes the best Android-friendly smartwatches – and the best of these is the awesome new Galaxy Watch.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch is our favorite Android watch owing to its intuitive and attractive design, super-sharp color display, and rotating bezel that makes navigating through notifications, messages, and apps a breeze. The large 46mm silver and black Galaxy Watch is on sale for $296 ($29 off) on Amazon right now, but you can also get the 42mm all-black or rose gold and pink models for $279 each ($41 off).

If the modern aesthetic of the Apple Watch isn’t your thing, then a hybrid smartwatch like the Fossil Q Commuter is a great alternative. The traditional-looking Commuter features built-in Bluetooth connectivity for syncing with your mobile device, and the non-intrusive subdial gives you at-a-glance phone notifications and a readout of daily progress toward your activity goals.
With its analog dial, stainless steel case, and leather wrist strap, it doesn’t get much more classic than the Commuter, and you’ve got a few color options all on sale right now for $116 ($39 off): steel and tan, gold and black, and steel and brown.

For fitness-focused techies, Garmin’s lineup of activity tracking smartwatches is rivaled only by the venerable Fitbit. The Vivoactive 3 is one of the standout members of the Garmin family, and unlike some activity trackers that are essentially just glorified pedometers, the Vivoactive 3 comes packed with advanced features like GPS, more than a dozen preloaded fitness apps, and Garmin Pay.
You’ve naturally got all the basic health tracking functions here, too, and the Vivoactive can even monitor your stress levels and VO2 max and automatically upload your fitness metrics to your Garmin Connect account for long-term tracking and goal-setting. The feature-rich Garmin Vivoactive 3 is on sale on Amazon right now for $50 off, letting you score this beefy fitness smartwatch for $250.

Our final pick is another of our favorites from Fossil and one that’s perfect for the ladies: The sleek Q Neely. The Fossil Q Neely features a similar hybrid design to the Commuter with its classic case and wrist band and traditional analog face, but this smartwatch also utilizes Bluetooth connectivity for accessing smart features like daily activity tracking, phone notifications, and sleep quality monitoring.
You’ve got a couple great styles to choose from that are on sale right now from Amazon: The stainless steel and black leather Fossil Q Neely is available for just $95 ($60 off), while the rose gold and beige leather model is on sale for $116 (saving you $39).

This is an incredible bargain for those who want a throwaway tablet device, and it will serve kids well especially.
Is this worth buying? I'm not a power user, but want something that will last 4-5 years.
I dunno about 4-5 years. The processor is an A10, which debuted in 2016. 4-5 years from now is 2023-24, when the A10 will be 7-8 years old. A 7-8 year old processor today would be, what, the A5 (iPhone 4s and iPad 2)? Maybe the A10 will hold up better because we’re getting into the realm of excess power with the A series processor, but I still think it’s a stretch.I just got iPad 6th generation for university and it has been the best investment I’ve made. Loving the ebook reading and taking notes. Completely new level for meI just ordered one of these 128GB versions, and an original Apple Pencil, after watching quite a few videos demonstrating how well Procreate works on this model. It seems to be a very functional and inexpensive way to dip one's toe into the creative capabilities of an iPad without going full-in on a much more expensive iPad Pro.

Yes it’s the iPad I recommend most people buy. I own a pro but that’s mostly because I like the 12.9” screen
It may be a stretch, but depending on what a user is trying to accomplish the tech has come far enough where we’re seeing smaller incremental advancement. I mean..Apple just sold out of an iPhone that has 3+ year old tech. Like anything else YMMV.
Sure, depends on what he wants to do with it. If he's ok leaving it on iOS 12 or 13 or whatever, the hardware itself surely will last 4-5 years. If he's looking to smoothly run the latest OS for the device's entirely life, probably not going to happen 4+ years from now. If he's looking to game on it, definitely not 4+ years from now.

The A10 should hold up fine 5 years for basic tasks. Its power overhead is quite large. The 2GB RAM, however, certainly will not. It is barely enough now.

Wait for the new ones, these will probably be unsupported for future iOS updates sometime in the next three years.
