Because the ads are relevant and unobtrusive, you keep faith with your visitors. Google is focused on good user experience, not confusing or misleading the user. When you win, they win.
One of the best things about AdSense ads is that they follow all of Google’s rules on user experience, which means that they tend to be more unobtrusive, less flashy and (hopefully) more targeted than other banner and display advertising – their contextuality is a big plus as relevance is the main game here—the more relevant the ad the more likely you are to get paid. How much will you make? That’s hard to say, and depends on the quality and uniqueness of your site’s content, the amount of traffic you get, and even the type of traffic. So keep working on your site and content.

Why Auto ads?
Auto ads make AdSense even easier to set up by using machine learning. Google intelligence does the work for you, choosing ads that will perform well, and placing them where they’ll have maximum effect.
This is a game changer, allowing you to add ads to your site in a simple way, and make incremental revenue from them without the cost of additional time and effort. It does requires handing control over to Google, who uses page crawling techniques to analyze and understand each page, so that the AI can adapt to improve ad performance.
And it works. During the beta test, participating publishers made on average 10% more revenue using Auto ads than they had been making on their own.
To get started, you just need to add a code snippet to each page you want ads on. After that you adjust the settings in your AdSense account by using the toggles to choose which ad formats are displayed, without ever having to edit the code.
Additionally, make sure you take advantage of Ad sizes optimization, a feature Google added in 2019. It automatically optimizes your fixed-size ads on mobile, taking into account the screen size and orientation of your visitor’s device.
Setting up your account
There’s an application process you’ll need to complete before you can use AdSense on your website. It’s simple, free, and only takes a minute or two. Approval may take a few days.
Head over to www.google.com/adsense and click on the “Sign Up Now” button. You just need to provide the URL to your website, and your email address. You can choose to opt in to AdSense emails, or not. That’s about it. Simple.
Setting up Auto ads on your site
Now that you have a new AdSense account, here’s how to get Auto ads up and running on your site.
Choose ad types
Log into your account and navigate to My Ads then Get Started. Select the ad formats you’d like to display, and click Save. You can adjust your choices at any time in the future.
Insert the code
On the next page you’ll see a code snippet. For a static site, copy it, then paste it between the <head> and </head> tags of each page. It may take 10-20 minutes before the ads appear.
On WordPress it’s better not to edit the code of your theme directly, or your changes will be overwritten every time the theme is updated. Instead, use a plugin to get your site working with Auto ads. There are a number available, including three that are endorsed by Google:
Once you’ve installed and enabled your plugin, you’ll have to configure it to work with AdSense and Auto ads. Depending on which one you have chosen, that probably involves adding your AdSense publisher ID and enabling Auto ads in the settings, and you’re right to go.
Optimizing for mobile
If you are using a lot of fixed-size ad units on your site you’ll want Google to optimize the ad size on mobile as well. Log into Adsense and navigate to Optimization, then the Opportunities page. Look for the Ad sizes setting in the “Optimization Settings” section, and select “Optimize 100% of mobile page views”.
Vary the ad settings across your site
Right now, manual and Auto ads are displayed consistently on every page of your site. You can opt to leave them that way, or you may prefer to tweak the ad settings on some of your pages:
There are a few ways to achieve this. For Auto ads, Google allows you to create URL Groups that can override your global ad settings with custom ones for specific sets of pages. Groups can be created by using domains, subdomains, directories or pages as criteria.
While that’s useful, grouping pages by URL isn’t always the best way. WordPress plugins offer more power and flexibility by allowing you to use additional criteria. For example, Advanced Ads allows you to group posts by category, tag, taxonomy, author and age, and Ad Inserter Pro can use category, tag, taxonomy, post type, post ID and URL.

When Kids Realize Their Whole Life Is Already Online
Natalie, now 13, said that in fifth grade she and her friends competed with one another over the amount of information about themselves on the internet. “We thought it was so cool that we had pics of ourselves online,” she said. “We would brag like, ‘I have this many pics of myself on the internet.’ You look yourself up, and it’s like, ‘Whoa, it’s you!’ We were all shocked when we realized we were out there. We were like, ‘Whoa, we’re real people.’”
Natalie’s parents are stringent about not posting photos of her to social media, so there are only a handful of photos of her out there, but she yearns for more. “I don’t want to live in a hole and only have two pics of me online. I want to be a person who is a person. I want people to know who I am,” she said.
Cara and other tweens say they hope to lay down ground rules for their parents. Cara wants her mom to tell her the next time she posts about her, and the 11-year-old would like veto power over any photo before it goes up. “My friends will always text or tell me, like, ‘OMG that pic your mom posted of you is so cute,’ and I’ll get really self-conscious,” she said. Hayden, a 10-year-old, said he realized several years ago that his parents used a dedicated hashtag including his name on photos of him. He now monitors the hashtag to make sure they don’t post anything embarrassing.
Once kids have that first moment of realization that their lives are public, there’s no going back. Several teens and tweens told me this was the impetus for wanting to get their own social-media profiles, in an effort to take control of their image. But plenty of other kids become overwhelmed and retreat. Ellen said that anytime someone has a phone out around her now, she’s nervous that her photo could be taken and posted somewhere. “Everyone’s always watching, and nothing is ever forgotten. It’s never gone,” she said.
In order to help kids navigate these waters, more elementary schools are rolling out digital-literacy programs. Jane, a 7-year-old, said she learned about her internet presence partly from her school in an online-safety presentation. Her father has also warned her about social media and lets her approve photos before they go up.

Still, Jane—who, like all the other kids in this story, spoke to me with her parents’ permission—worries. She’s too young to navigate the web on her own, but she feels that a lot of what’s out there on the internet about her is beyond her control. “I don’t really like how people know things about me, and I don’t even know them,” she said. “Thousands and millions of things are out there maybe.” Andy, also 7, is always on the lookout for people who might take unflattering photos of him. He once caught his mother taking a photo of him sleeping and, another time, doing a silly dance. He immediately told her not to post it on Facebook, and she obliged. He felt the photos were embarrassing.
Latest European Commission Antitrust Fine Targets Google AdSense, Expected In Coming Weeks
Over the past several years, Google has faced a handful of antitrust fines in Europe from Search to of course Android. The latest is focussed on its AdSense advertising business, with a penalty expected in the coming weeks.
According to Bloomberg, European regulators are getting ready to fine Google for unfairly restricting advertising rivals. The European Commission opened a case in 2016 over whether the company prevented AdSense for Search users from using competing services.
This product allows sites to create a custom search engine for a domain that can be monetized with targeted ads from Google. Regulators argue that Google is abusing its dominant position in this market by preventing and restricting sites from accepting other advertisers:
Compared to the €2.4 billion penalty for prioritizing its Shopping service in Search over rival ones, and the €4.3 billion Android decision that is currently being appealed, the AdSense fine could be lower. Bloomberg reports that Google has collaborated with regulators on introducing changes to AdSense.
